	SpeedFan is a nice way to monitor your PC's CPU tempature.  If your PC shuts down abruptly, it can be from your CPU over heating. This is a great free tool to diagnose that issue.
	Dead Pixel Buddy is a great free tool to help you determine if your LCD monitor on your laptop has any "dead" or non working pixels.
